Created in 2006 by the Generalitat de Catalunya and the University of Girona the Catalan Institute for Research in Cultural Heritage wants to place the heritage received, the legacy of time and civilizations, the thread of memory, at the center of its activity.
Currently, from September 28, 2022, the direction of the center falls to Dr. Gemma Domènech.
Since 2013, the ICRPC has been directed by Professor Joaquim Nadal and with the technical direction of Dr. John Bosch.
The center had in the initial phase (2007-2013) the direction of Dr. Gabriel Alcalde and the technical direction of Dr. Josep Burch, period in which the first lines of research were deployed.
We give cultural heritage a universal dimension and look at both tangible and intangible heritage and we follow the guidelines of Unesco in this matter and of all international organizations including ICOM.
Heritage is the testimony that has come down to us of the evolution of human societies and has a documentary, physical and immaterial value, which helps us to identify and define the profile of civilizations and societies.
In Catalonia the trail and accumulated vestiges acquire a singular dimension associated with the historical, social, institutional and cultural evolution of our territory. Sites, monuments and equipment define a rich and remarkable network that expresses the successive processes of patrimonialization
The ICRPC focuses its research on this heritage. To its study, to its uses, to the new processes of patrimonialisation, to the audiences who come there and to the attraction of new audiences.
The basic research is accompanied by applied and combined research, they seek to have the basic tools to define a map, a repertoire, an inventory, and the corresponding cataloging of Catalan heritage and it is proposed to disseminate, study and internationalize it.
Own work with the research lines of its team and its members and commissions from institutions and individuals make up the baggage of the nearly ten years of the Institute’s existence and the definition of its future lines.
